About the UTPA REU program

Note: The following description is based on the 2007-2010 program. If the program continues in the future, some elements may differ from those described below.

The University of Texas-Pan American REU program is supported financially by the National Science Foundation, with an emphasis on subtropical biology. The goal of the program is to support and prepare students to enter graduate school (not health professions) and ultimately enter careers in research and technology. Students in the program:

  • Get paid! Students receive generous stipends for their work. Students work full time (40 hours / week) during summers and part time (10 hours / week) during fall and spring semesters.
  • Work individually with mentors on original research projects; click here to read about the mentors involved in the program.
  • Attend career development workshops specifically designed for this program.
  • Travel to at least two scientific conferences, including one national or international conference.
  • Take classes together.
  • Receive a GRE preparation course from Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions.
  • Meet with visiting mentors from other institutions.
  • Receive a housing scholarship to live on campus for part of the year.
  • And much, much more!
