Student Access & Development
Research is an extremely important component of the undergraduate experience for biology and chemistry students. The goal of the research program is to develop student independence, creativity, and critical thinking. A secondary goal is to broaden the scientific knowledge and laboratory skills of student researchers.
In addition to an undergraduate research training opportunity
for students and a required ethics and methods of biological research
course, the HHMI program implements a strong seminar program designed
to bring students in contact with the broader scientific community.
The Seminar Series is coordinated throughout each grant year
with guest speakers scheduled each month to address current issues
in bioscience and technology research. HHMI students will invite
keynote speakers for presentations during a mini-symposium each
semester. The intent of the Seminar Series is to spark interest
among students to solidify their intent to pursue scientific careers,
provide role models, and introduce new ideas, skills, and techniques.
The Undergraduate Research Training
Program is an opportunity for ten students to take part in
a major research project in the course of the academic year. Full-time
science majors are eligible to apply. Applications for the Undergraduate
Research Training are available online and in the Biology and
Chemistry department beginning in February. Selection for the
training is made through a competitive process by a committee
that reviews a student’s academic achievement, leadership potential,
career ambition, letters of recommendation, and presentation during
a personal interview.
