The following workshops will be available for the conference

Our Experience in Literature with David Rice: Awaiting his new publication in 1999, this emerging Chicano writer shares the magic that is seen in his published work, Give the Pig a Chance and Other Stories. David Rice shares vivid experiences of living in the Rio Grande Valley with humor and sensitivity. His stories deal with issues relating to contemporary Mexican American life.
Our Indigenous Reality: Jose and Helga Garza assist in providing a connection between our indigenous past and present. Their extensive knowledge and experience as directors of Casa de Colores in Brownsville will facilitate the process of reconciling ourselves with our indigenous past. This workshop will provide insight on current native struggles for survival in North, Central, and South America and will encourage our community to restore their understanding of their native ancestral traditions as a means to economic, cultural, social, and psychological survival.
21st Century Mexicano Cultural Political Movement: Southwest Texas State Professor Raul Garcia examines the Chicano at the eve of the twenty-first. After publishing two volumes of his book, Liberation of the South Texas Valley, Professor Garcia shares his perspectives on the imperative conditions for political and economic development in our communities
Understanding the Chiapas Conflict: Southwest Texas State University students, Christina Hernandez and Manuel Camero, will provide an historical background on the Zapatista struggle as well as U.S.-Mexico relations concerning the subject. Both sides of the issue will be analyzed. A discussion on its importance and relation to Chicanos will follow. They will emphasize the importance of women in Chiapas as well.
La Villa Artists: With the guidance of recognized art instructor Elmira Cura, these high school students transport you into a world of artistic talent. These unique works demonstrate the creativity of our youth on both traditional and non-traditional mediums. These talented young students explore our community's struggles and triumphs.
MEChA 101: M.E.Ch.A. members will provide a concise historical background on M.E.Ch.A. its philosophy and direction. High school students are encouraged to partake in this workshop especially those students who wish to start a M.E.Ch.A. chapter at their high school.
Effective Fundraising Strategies: This workshop is geared to discuss effective fundraising strategies for M.E.Ch.A. chapters. Chapters' treasurers are encouraged to attend this workshop. It will deal with what strategies have worked and what have not.
Chicanos in the Internet-Creating and Developing Webpages: Today's changing world requires skills, particularly those involving technology. In order for us to reach our goals, we must be familiar with technology. This workshop will involve hands-on Internet instruction. We will build a webpage from scratch. Everyone should send at least one representative so that your chapter or school can have a website.
Pre-requesists: To save time, we ask that anyone interested in attending this workshop to please have the following items ready before the workshop begins.
  • 1) Have a Hotmail, Juno, or any Internet accesssible E-mail address. You can get a free E-mail at the following locations: www.hotmail.com or www.juno.com
  • 2) Have a Geocities account. Geocities provides free webpages. Just fill the application, but use your hotmail E-mail address. www.geocities.com
  • 3) Bring your chapter's constitution, basic info, and any other info that you may want to post in a 3 1/2" diskette (IBM formatted). All documents should be in MicroSoft Word. (Don't worry about the Regional or National Constitution or los planes since they are already online.)

Nuestro Arte- Life from an Artist Perspective: Rio Grande City native Xavier Garza transports us to a world of vivid imagery and symbolism through his artwork. This artist includes poetry in his exhibitions. His art deals with the contemporary Chicano experience. Bright Colors in his art reinforce his dynamic poetry.
Introduction to Robert's Rule of Order: From city council to large assemblies, Robert's rules of order are used to run meetings. This workshop will introduce the basic procedures of Robert's rules of order.
