September 17, 1998
To all interested individuals,
El Sexto Sol de M.E.Ch.A. at the University of Texas Pan American will host the 1998 Southeast Tejaztlan Regional Conference. We are diligently working to produce an informative and inspiring conference. Our conference theme is "Hacia Un Futuro Sin Fronteras". We will concentrate on the cultural and self-awareness of our youth. The following page provides an overview of our theme. M.E.Ch.A. has always encouraged youth participation in community development. For this reason, we are encouraging high school and college students to participate.
We anticipate a large number of M.E.Ch.A. members from across the state to be present. One of our main goals is to realize that our communities have a lot to offer. El Valle del Rio Grande has long been rich in history and tradition. To demonstrate this, many of our workshops will consist of people from the valley. All of them are assets to their communities and to our culture.
Ultimately, we anticipate to raise the cultural and political awareness of all participants. When people leave home after the conference they will have a Si Se Puede attitude. Why? Well, many of our presenters are people from our own experience. And thanks to an awareness of our people's struggle they rose above their expectations. The workshop presenters are not distant to our experience. They will share their extensive knowledge with us.
We will begin Friday night with a welcome and a dynamic high spirited noche cultural, Flor y Canto, where selected poets and musicians will share their talents. There will also be an open mic period for those interested in reading their poetry or short stories. On Saturday, we will have workshops and assemblies. The workshops are primarily to gather knowledge; the assemblies will be for sharing ideas and new perspectives. At the end of the day we will have a pachanga, where we will enjoy the music of Aztlan Sound DJ Services.
We hope to share this historic and inspiring weekend with you. If you have any question, please feel free to contact me at (956) 262-2928 or E-mail me at JRValdez@hotmail.com. We hope to see hear from you soon.
Thank you for your time,
Jose Raul Valdez,
President of El Sexto Sol de M.E.Ch.A.
