History

In 1995, 13 members of El Sexto Sol de MEChA from UT-Pan American went to the 1995 MEChA National Conference at the University of California, Berkeley. During this time, all of the Texas MEChA chapters belonged to the Centro Aztlan Region. This region include the states of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Due to the geographic size of Texas, it was dificult for the Texas chapters to meet and communicate with the rest of the MEChA chapter from the Centro Aztlan region. Logistics proved to be the determining factor for the need of a new and separate region. During the Centro Aztlan regional meeting at the 1995 National Conference, El Sexto Sol de MEChA made the motion to allow Texas to become its own region. The Regional assembly voted unanimously to include the new region at the National Resolution. At the MEChA National Resolution Circle, members from all the present MEChA chapters from across the country voted to make Texas its own region and was thereafter named SouthEast Tejaztlan.
