Workshop Descriptions
Leadership
This workshop will discuss the need for leadership in our communities and the important role
MEChista's and Chicanos can play in addressing the needs of our community.
Chicanismo 101
This workshop will explore the concept of the ethnic pride and history, as well as how we can
utilize it to better our communities and in essence, ourselves.
Lowriding
The Lowriding scene has been an important part of the Chicano culture. This workshop will not
only discuss Lowriders themselves, but also the Lowrider movement.
Chicanos in Hip Hop
This workshop will bring out the different aspects that comprise the hip-hop scene. It will also
explore how, ethnically and regionally, Chicanos have shaped hip-hop in remarkable ways.
MEChA 101
This workshop is designed to giver newer MEChistas and interested students and introduction to
the history, purpose, function and structure of MEChA. The workshop offers a broad view of
MEChA to allow students to grasp fundamental concepts of leadership and organizing through the
use of discussion and examples.
Indigenous Identity
The purpose of this workshop is to sohw Chicanos the contributions made by our ancestors.
It will explore how our indigenous past directly correlates with our culture today.
Chicana and Chicano Literature
This workshop will expose a part of the contemporary literary movement that is all to often
ignored by textbooks and learning institutions. Chicana and Chicano authors will finally
get the recognition that they deserve.
Chicana History
Women have always been a pat of the movement. This workshop will explain how historically
Chicanas have shaped our culture into what it is today.
Combating Homophobia in the Chicano Community
This workshop will help Chicanos understand homosexually in the community and the family
structure, as well as how to put an end to the atrocities against our homosexual brothers
and sisters.
Combating Machismo
This workshop is designed to help us break the shackles of the traditional gender roles
that hinder both men and women.
Understanding MEChA's Guiding Documents
The purpose of tihs workshop is to have discussion regarding MEChA's founding documents.
The documents are El Plan de Santa Barbara, El Plan Espiritual de Aztlan and the
MEChA National Constitutional.
Chicanos in Film
This workshop will discuss the impact the Chicanos have had in the motion picture industry.
Chicana Feminism
This workshop will expose the impact that Chicana Feminists have had on the movement as well
as the impact of women who do not call themselves feminists.
The Chiapas Conflict
Chiapas, Mexico has been in turmoil for quite sometime. This workshop will explain what the
Mexican government is doing to the indigenous people and what we, in the States, can do to help.
Chicanos in Higher Education
This workshop is geared towards high school seniors. It will explain the importance of a higher
education and assist them in filling out an application to attend the University of Houston.
Immigation
This workshop will explore the reality of immigration and how it effects the many aspects
of our community.

1. Anyone wishing to Pre-Register must have their completed registration forms and full paymentpostmarked by
October 11, 1999.
2. All College and University students must show their current school ID.
3. Personal checks will not be accepted for payment of pre-registration fees or conference
on-site registration fees. Organization
checks, cashier's check, money orders and cash will beaccepted. DO NOT send cash in the mail.
4. There will be no refund of conference registration fees.
5. Only MEChA members will be allowed to attend the Regional Meeting on Sunday,
November 14th.
6. Any disruption of the 1999 MEChA Regional Conference or violation of any rules andregulations of the University of Houston
result in expulsion from the conference.
7. MeChA at University of Houston reserves the right to refuse admittance to anyone.
