Notes from the Saddle

Greetings from Pan Am, where we kicked off another fall semester with a record enrollment of over 19,000 students, a Bronc Roundup that packed the fieldhouse with 2,000 new students, and the opening of the King Tut Exhibit, which we expect will attract more than 50,000 visitors to our campus. Then, of course, there is the celebration of the 10th HESTEC....

But the real stunner in the Valley this coming month will be the Vista Summit. People from across the United States, including philanthropic foundations, are finally taking notice of the Valley - and of the great potential here. On October 5th and 6th, executive officers of the Ford Foundation, Gates Foundation, Lumina Foundation, Greater Texas Foundation, and at least four other philanthropic organizations will hear from mothers, alumni, faculty, UT System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa, UT Brownsville President Juliet Garcia, and from me about the opportunities to transform the Valley through investments in human and cultural capital. They will hear about how education is an economic engine and how our University, along with UT Brownsville, Texas State Technical College, and South Texas College, will serve as the anchor to ensure the economic vitality of the region and the realizations of the dreams of our students.

Yes, the Vista Summit will dream big, really big. Please read Jennifer Berghom's story about the Vista Summit. Bringing all these foundations together under one roof with local politicians, philanthropists, business people, and educators is unprecedented.

I invite you to dream along with us. There are endless possibilities. The UT System and these foundations are firmly committed to partnering with us because they are convinced the payoff will be exponential for the Valley, state, and nation. As for me, I am convinced that the payoff will be huge for our students.

Como siempre, mano a mano seguimos adelante.

Sincerely,

Robert S. Nelsen
President
