Dr. Yu-Chi Tai, an internationally acclaimed and multiple award-winning pianist and visiting assistant professor of piano at UTPA, will accompany the Valley Symphony Orchestra during the orchestra's concert to benefit UTPA's new performing arts center April 22.

The Valley’s best talents will gather to offer an evening of great music to support the arts at UTPA. The chamber concert is led by Music Director Peter Dabrowski and accompanied by the internationally acclaimed and multiple award-winning pianist Dr. Yu-Chi Tai and the UTPA Wind Quintet.

They will take a romantic journey and play compositions by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Franz Liszt, and Francis Poulenc, among others.

Proceeds from the event will go toward the $4 million the University still needs to build the center’s recital hall, a crucial missing piece to the Mondrian-inspired edifice now under construction. The recital hall will allow artists, UTPA students, faculty, and local schools’ students to have a place to rehearse and perform.

Dabrowski said he is excited about what will be the future home of the Valley Symphony Orchestra & Chorale.

“All the 180 musicians and I are very pleased to help UT Pan American raise funds for the recital hall. The Valley Symphony Orchestra and the Chorale are looking forward to playing at the center and offering the very best of symphonic and choir music in the Valley,” he said.

The concert will be preceded by a welcome reception from 6-7 p.m. National beverage distributor Glazer's is helping sponsor the reception. Before the concert and during the intermission, concert-goers will have the opportunity to learn about the recital hall and the UTPA APAC and to take a chance to win a pass for VSO’s 2013/2014 season and other gifts.

Tickets are $30 (general admission) and may be purchased online at www.utpa.edu/apac, at the door or by phone at (956) 661-1615.
