|The UTPA Dance Ensemble will perform its annual Spring Concert April 25-27 at the Edinburg High School Performing Arts Center.|
The concert will include works by guest artists Kimberly Karpanty and Lisa Smith, as well as works by UTPA Dance Ensemble Artistic Directors Min Kim, Fred Darsow and Dana Shackelford and senior dance major Isaac Pena.
Performances include the dance "Pachuco Zoot: A Tale of Identity" by Smith, who heads the dance program at The University of Texas at El Paso, and a jazz piece entitled "Take it Out" by Karpanty, an associate professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance at Kent State University in Ohio.
Darsow will premier his piece, "Lunge," by Beat Antique, in which he is challenging himself and his dancers to get more aerobic and heighten the level of athleticism in this new dance.
Kim will present "Bitter Sorrow," a dance which deals with the painful human emotion of regret and recently was selected for the 2013 South-Central American College Dance Festival's Gala Concert.
Shackelford's piece, "Perceived Obstacles," is an exploration of the physicality of how we can be either hindered or helped by what we think is blocking us from our goals and the two resulting energies of fight or flow. Pena will perform his piece, "Vamp," which was also presented at the 2013 South-Central American College Dance Festival.
Tickets cost $8 for adults and $5 for children and students with ID and will be available at the door. For more information, contact the Dance Program office at (956) 665-2230 or visit the Dance Program website.
