The early Bronc catches the class! How students benefit from early registration

With the spring semester already at midterm, it is important to start planning out the next step to graduation. Students who register early for classes not only have greater opportunities for a successful academic semester but also getting one step closer to achieving their college degree.

Students are encouraged to register for classes early and to also complete their FAFSA by the priority deadline of March 15 for the 2013-2014 academic semester.
Planning for classes begins with making an appointment with an academic adviser. UTPA requires all undergraduate students to meet with an adviser before any semester registration can officially take place. Advisers provide assistance with course selections, degree planning, graduation checks, holds, and referrals to campus services and resources. If you are a junior or senior, it is important to contact the college of your major to schedule an appointment with your adviser. Academic advisement at UTPA begins March 18. The Registrar’s Office encourages students to meet with an adviser by April 26.

Freshmen or sophomores who have yet to declare a major, should contact the University Academic Advising Center (UAAC) for assistance on the registration process at (956) 665-7120 or make an appointment on the UAAC website. This link also allows students to check their degree plan, check transferable coursework, and keep track of important academic calendar dates.

Official registration begins for graduate students, student-athletes, disability services clientele, honors students, dean’s list students, and veterans on April 1. Seniors can register April 3; Juniors April 5; Sophomores April 9; and Freshmen April 15.

Before official registration, students can check class schedules on Assist to plan the most effective schedule. Early registration is imperative on securing the classes you need for your degree plan. Students can also check the status of any holds, or other logistical information pertaining to their academic record.

Dr. Jeff Rhodes, University Registrar, said students who wait to register will face disadvantages.

"Students who procrastinate on registration often are unable to get a seat in the courses they need for their degree, and as a result they may enroll in unnecessary courses which results in more student debt, longer enrollment, and lost income and opportunities,” he said. “Students who register early get the courses they need and are able to graduate earlier, which opens the doors to higher paying jobs and many new opportunities.”

Students who receive financial aid need to register with FAFSA at www.fafsa.gov. UTPA federal school code is 003599. The priority deadline for FAFSA early registration begins March 15 for the 2013-14 academic semesters. FAFSA applications can be submitted any time year round, however, priority deadline will be given to students who submit on or before March 15. This year, the Office of Financial Aid is offering many different incentives for students to receive cash rebates, discounts, and other financial advantages.
