Twenty-four students, staff and faculty at The University of Texas-Pan American were deputized on campus Jan. 30 to assist with voter registration prior to the March 5 voter registration deadline for the spring 2012 elections.
Katie Walters, program outreach coordinator with the Advocacy Alliance Center of Texas (AACT Now), a non-partisan, nonprofit organization formed to promote greater civic engagement and participation in the electoral process by South Texas voters, made a presentation following the registration training and swearing in. UTPA President Robert S. Nelsen is a AACT Now board member.
The deputies are participating in a voter registration drive this week that is being conducted in the Student Union Commons 11 a.m.-1 p.m. daily through Friday, Feb. 4. The deputies will also assist students in checking if they are registered to vote and show them how to complete the informal online application if they choose to print and mail their voter registration on their own.
The primary elections will be held Tuesday, April 3. Early voting for the primary elections will be held from March 19-30.
