UTPA, along with several other Texas universities, have partnered with Texas State Technical College (TSTC) to offer upper-level undergraduate and graduate-level courses to students in Harlingen and surrounding areas. The other institutions participating are: The University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB), Le Tourneau University in Longview, Our Lady of the Lake University of San Antonio, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, The University of Houston, and Wayland Baptist University in Plainview.
TSTC and the Harlingen Economic Development Corporation developed the University Center, where the programs will be housed, to offer more educational opportunities for students.
"This is a very formalized structure in the state of Texas where universities come together to offer degree programs away from their main campus," said Dr. Cynthia Brown, vice provost for graduate studies at UTPA.
UTPA will begin offering courses in its Master of Accountancy program this fall and plans to add classes in its graduate certificate programs in communication training and consulting and media relations and strategic communications, as well as its principal credential program and its joint program with UTB in educational administration in Fall 2013.
"We're really excited to be bringing most of our sought-after graduate programs to the Harlingen area," Brown said. "I think it's a great opportunity for the people in that area to have access to these programs without having to drive to Edinburg."
The Master of Accountancy program will help students become eligible to pursue becoming a certified public accountant and provide them the opportunity to receive specialized training including auditing and forensic accounting, Brown said.
"We feel that there's a strong need not only from those who are about to gradate or recently graduated, but those who are in the working professions who want to come back and increase their skill level," Brown said.
