UTPA offers summer fun and education

After the last school bell rings and summer vacation officially begins, where will your kids spend their time? The University of Texas-Pan American will be hosting a series of camps for elementary, middle and high school students to promote fitness, health, technology, math, science and leadership.

2011 Wellness and Recreational Sports Complex Summer Youth Camp (Ages 6-11)

Locations: Wellness and Recreational Sports Complex

Four TWO week sessions (Monday-Friday)

Session III July 5-July 15, 2011 (no camp Monday 7/4)

Aric Bostick Camp of Champs

June 16-19, 2011

June 16: Check-in is at 2 p.m.

June 19: Check-out is at 2 p.m.

Camp of Champs is a success and leadership experience for middle school students that will inspire them to work toward their goals by learning how to have unstoppable self-confidence, honesty with themselves and others, how to take daily action toward dreams, stay motivated in school and life, connect with true purpose and create their own definition of success. All students will live at UTPA's Troxell Hall for the duration of the camp. Activities will primarily be held at the University's Ballroom and Student Union.

Camp Fee includes CHAMPS curriculum, team-building activities, camp T-shirt and daily organizer: $350

Migrant University Summer Experience (MUSE)

June 4-July 7

MUSE offers high school migrant students from the Region One area instruction that will earn them high school credit, an on-campus university residential experience at UTPA's Unity Hall, professional workplace and career internships at UTPA, a tour of Texas universities, a concluding graduation ceremony, living allowances, and follow-up pre-college seminars.

ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp

July 17-29

This camp is designed to provide middle school students with activities, experiments, projects and field experiences in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It is a free, two-week academic camp that also provides on-campus housing and a college life experience. All classes and activities will be held in the engineering building, student union and ballroom. Students can also look forward to the UTPA Planetarium and a field trip to the Coastal Studies Lab on South Padre Island.

TexPrep Plus Camp

June 6-July 22

Camp dates are Monday-Friday 12:45 - 5:35 p.m.

This camp is designed for Hidalgo County middle and high school students who hold a B average or better in math and an overall B average in his/her classes. Students selected to attend this seven-week camp will take courses in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. All courses will be held at UTPA's Academic Services, engineering, science and math buildings. They will also be given a weekly project that will be presented at the end of each week. When the camp is complete students will meet with a TexPrep mentor once a month.

Girls STEM Camp

June 20-24

This camp was created for middle school girls from the 2010-2011 UTPA Mother Daughter Program who have actively participated in all program sessions and events. During the camp students will live on campus at UTPA's Heritage Hall and will attend STEM classes, speaker events and will have the opportunity to get hands-on experience in STEM fields and receive a tour of the campus. The camp is free for those students who are selected to attend.

GenTx Camp

June 20-24

Students selected to attend this camp are high school students from school districts across the Rio Grande Valley that have a partnership with UTPA Generation Texas Program. During the camp, students will be housed on the UTPA campus. They will be promoting post secondary education through community service, table events and presentations. The camp is free for those students selected.

Striving Towards Educational Pathways (STEP)

Sessions: July 11-15 / July 18-22 / Aug. 1-5 / Aug. 8-12 Time: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Location: UTPA

Registration Deadline: Two weeks before the start of each session

This camp is designed to encourage Rio Grande Valley high school students to start thinking about college and a brighter future by exposing them to STEM careers and sustainability. At the camp, participants will get a look into team building, gaming, LEAN manufacturing, entrepreneurship, sustainability, engineering and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). They will also have the opportunity to receive hands-on experience in each of the topics and work with top-notch faculty and instructors who are experts in their fields and professional backgrounds.

Athletic Camps

Manny Mantrana Baseball Academy

There are five camps held during the time of June 6-July 22 from 8:00 a.m.-noon

This camp is designed to teach the fundamentals of baseball to children 5-13 years old. All participants will receive instruction in all aspects of the sport from the UTPA coaching staff. The camp will be held at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium. All campers must bring a baseball glove, spike shoes, pants, a bat, helmet and shorts.

Fees:

$90 per camper

$80 per camper for families with 2 children attending the camp

$75 per camper for families with 3 or more children attending the camp

$40 non-refundable deposit or full payment at registration is required

2011 Volleyball Summer Camps

Location: UTPA Fieldhouse

Volleykids / July 11-13 / 9 a.m-noon/ $75

This camp focuses on the basic skills and fundamentals of a volleyball game. Movement concepts and game-like scenarios will feature modified net heights and instructional techniques adapted for a young beginner girl or boy. This camp is open to anyone who has completed grades 2nd -6th.

Performance Camp / July 14-16 / Resident Camper $280 / Day Camp $200

9 a.m.-8 p.m.

This camps focuses on those players who have a foundation of skills and are interested in becoming a better player. Individual skills and techniques will be covered and put toward team and game oriented training. Tournament games will conclude the camp on the final day. This camp is open to anyone who has completed grades 6th-10th.

Team Camp / July 18-20 / Resident Camper $280 / Day Camper $200

9 a.m.-8 p.m.

This camp is designed to prepare all high school volleyball team players - 9th grade, junior varsity and varsity - for the volleyball school season. Players will be trained in all individual skills, team skills and concepts. Topics in offensive, defensive, and serve receive patterns will be covered, ending with a play pool tournament on the final day. School coaches are also being asked to address specific team needs that will be covered during the camp. Schools will also compete in pool play tournaments on the last day of camp.

Coaches Clinic / July 18-19 / Resident Camper $125 / Day Camper $100

9 a.m.-8 p.m.

During the clinic, middle and high school coaches will have the opportunity of sharing and hearing ideas on how to advance their teams to the next level. They will get to discuss techniques and drills and other training methods used by their teams. Coaches are asked to please come prepared with questions.

Setter, Hitter, Libero Camp / July 21-23 / Resident Camper $280 / Day Camper $200

9 a.m.-8 p.m.

This is an intensive camp designed for volleyball players who have completed any grade and who are looking for specific positional instruction and repetition. All skills covered will be relevant to each game position. Camps will then be combined to work together to practice skills in a team setting. The camp will conclude with a 6 on 6 tournament.

UTPA Men's Broncs Basketball Summer Camp

June 20-23, 2011

Drop off: 8:30 a.m. / Pick up: 1:30 p.m.

All campers will have the opportunity of learning the fundamentals of basketball from UTPA coaching staff and men's basketball team. They will receive instruction in shooting, dribbling, passing, rebounding, defense and offense. At the end of each day, campers can look forward to skills contests and basketball games. All campers will receive a T-shirt and are encouraged to bring lunch. A pizza and snack bar will be available for campers to purchase lunch.

Camp participants must be 7-16 years old to participate.

Aquatics Swim School and Pre-Competitive Swimming Summer 2011

June 6-23 / June 27-14 / July 18-Aug. 4 / Aug. 8-25 (No classes July 4)

This summer swimming program is designed for all ages. Each class is 30 minutes and will focus on different styles of swimming depending on the session you choose. Some are focused on teaching adults and children how to swim, others introduce babies to the water, while others prepare experienced swimmers for competition. All participants must bring a swimsuit, goggles and a towel(s). Swimming classes are held at the Wellness and Recreational Sports Complex pool.

Water Baby (3 months-3 years)

30 minute sessions: 9 a.m.-1 p.m. or 5-8 p.m.

*On Aug. 8-25 the evening session will be from 5-9 p.m.

Fees:

General Public $120 per session

UTPA Non-member $111 per session

WRSC Member $105 per session

Learn to Swim Sessions (Adults and Children Ages 3+)

30 minute sessions: 9 a.m.-1 p.m. or 5-8 p.m.

Pre-Competitive Swimming Sessions (Youth Ages 6+)

45 minute sessions:

Class A: 4-4:45 p.m.

Class B: 4:45-5:30 p.m.

Class C: 5:30-6:15 p.m.

Class D: 6:15-7 p.m.

UTPA Non-member $79 per session
