Students at The University of Texas-Pan American joined thousands across the country in celebrating National Volunteer Week April 11 - 16 by participating in several activities hosted by the University's Community Service Connection.

In one event, student organizations competed in a "Can Castle" Competition to promote a food drive launched earlier in the semester to benefit the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley. Teams built castles out of donated canned goods and other nonperishable food items and were judged on their creativity.

Sigma Tau Delta-Alpha Lambda Psi International English Honor Society received a $100 cash prize for capturing first place. Student group Men of Vision garnered second place and a pizza party.

Throughout the week, students also attended nonprofit leadership round table discussions, where they learned about careers in the nonprofit sector, a Community Service Fair and a workshop where they heard from speakers about how to become more actively involved in their communities and around the globe.
