Six students at The University of Texas-Pan American had the opportunity to share their study abroad experiences at the International Women's Board scholarship luncheon Feb. 17 held at the International Trade and Technology Building. Through the Student Assistance Program for Summer Study Abroad, the IWB awards scholarships to approximately 50 students each year to travel outside the United States to conduct research or study subjects related to their major. This past summer IWB scholarship students travelled to countries including China, Germany, Italy, and Morocco. Pictured left to right at the event are: Dr. Havidán Rodríguez, UTPA provost and vice president for academic affairs; Janice Odom, vice president for university advancement; IWB Scholarship recipients Roland Gonzalez, graduate student in business administration; Victoria Medellin, graduate student in global security studies and leadership; Ashley Bose, senior, pre-medicine and chemistry; Sandra Rios, graduate student in accounting; Crystal Rodriguez, graduate student in interdisciplinary studies; Kristan Hopperstad, senior, biology; Sara Saldaña, IWB president; and Dr. Kenneth Buckman, associate professor, Department of History and Philosophy and director of the Rafael A. "Felo" & Carmen Guerra Honors Program. Sixteen of last year's IWB scholarship recipients were Guerra Honors Program students. Sponsored by the UTPA Foundation, the IWB seeks to contribute to the breadth, depth, and quality of education at UTPA by acting as ambassadors for the University and providing scholarships and meeting other special needs. The membership has a special interest in supporting and encouraging ideas, projects, and activities that foster international understanding.
