December 3 will mark the kick off of the official 2010 holiday season with the lighting of Edinburg's Christmas tree, located in the City Hall Courtyard at 415 W. University Drive. Join Mayor Richard Garcia and the Edinburg City Council for the start of a tradition that will continue for years to come. This 24-foot Christmas tree is decorated with hundreds of lights and ornaments that will illuminate Edinburg for the month of December.
The festivities do not stop there. They continue December 4 with the annual Night of Lights Celebration beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the UTPA Quad area. There will be an official welcome by UTPA President Robert Nelsen, Mayor Garcia and Hidalgo County Judge Ramon Garcia. Entertainment will include performances by local elementary and middle school choirs, culminating with performances by Edinburg North High School Junior Varsity and Varsity choirs singing songs of the season.
UTPA student organizations will also be on hand selling food and desserts. All proceeds go to support their organizations.
At 6:30 p.m. , line your chairs and family along University Drive for a parade filled with floats by local businesses and organizations, music from local school bands, and of course, Santa Claus. The parade will make its way west from the Hidalgo County Courthouse, down the north lane of University Drive, and ending at the UTPA campus. Night of Lights festivities will end with an extravagant fireworks display at 10 p.m. at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
UTPA and the City of Edinburg invite you and your family to celebrate traditions that will create lifelong memories.
“We are very excited that together the City of Edinburg and UTPA can provide a fun filled weekend of activities for the entire family," said Ramiro Garza Jr., Edinburg city manager. "We hope that residents from all over, not just Edinburg come to enjoy.”
