|La Joya ISD students aboard a marine vessel learn how to use plankton nets during an educational trip to UTPA's Coastal Studies Laboratory.|
The workshops are being offered Friday, Nov. 5 and Friday, Dec. 3, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Each six-hour workshop, taught by Brigette Goza, certified science teacher and educator/naturalist at the lab, will provide teachers with a hands-on experience in marine science. Participants will take part in both field and lab activities and be provided with TEKS and Ocean Literacy-aligned lessons to use with their students on field trips to the island and in the classroom.
The workshops will also include the following:
• Ecological tour of the Laguna Madre aboard a marine vessel;
• Educational tour of the Coastal Studies Laboratory and Sea Turtle, Inc.;
• Marine specimen collection and identification;
• Shark dissection; and
• Scientific measurements, observations, classification, data collections and scientific inquiry.
Workshop completion will enable teachers to earn SBEC (State Board for Educator Certification) professional development hours. Other dates and Saturday workshops are also available upon request for those groups meeting an eight teacher minimum class size.
