|- P. Simran Sethi|
Sethi, who is a professor at the University of Kansas School of Journalism and Mass Communication, is one of today's most respected experts on sustainability and environmental communications. She has been named a "Top Ten Eco-Hero" by the UK's Independent newspaper and the "environmental messenger" by Vanity Fair magazine. She is founding host of the Sundance Channel's "The Green," which features environmental programming, and the creator of the Sundance online series "The Good Fight," which highlights global environmental justice efforts and grassroots activism.
The Distinguished Speakers Series, now in its seventh year, is underwritten by student fees as recommended by the Student Affairs Advisory Committee, and receives support from the Student Union and other University departments. The selection of Sethi by the committee reflects the desire students voiced for a series speaker who will complement efforts currently under way at UTPA to incorporate sustainability concepts into university practices, said Edna Zambrano, Student Union director.
Sethi is co-author of "Ethical Markets: Growing the Green Economy," which profiles the leaders of highly successful green businesses around the world. The book won an Axiom Award for best book on business ethics.
Committed to a redefinition of environmentalism that includes voices from the prairie, the inner city, and the global community, Sethi shares her message through her blogs for The Huffington Post and Oprah.com as well as on "NBC Nightly News," the "Today Show," "Martha Stewart," "Ellen" and others.
The free event is open to the public, however seating is limited. UTPA students, faculty and staff will be admitted with a valid University ID at 7 p.m. while the general public will be allowed to enter at 7:20 p.m.
