Starting this summer, students who are eligible to receive the federal financial assistance can continue to receive aid for the summer semester, even if the government gave them money for the previous fall and spring semesters.
This summer, students must enroll for at least six credits to receive the Pell grant, said Jael Garcia, UTPA’s assistant director of student financial services.
This expansion of Pell disbursements will benefit students greatly. More than half of the University’s 18,337 students qualify for the federal financial assistance.
“It definitely helps a lot,” Garcia said.
The University has limited funds available for grants for the summer semester, so many students would either have to take out a loan or pay out of pocket for those classes, Garcia said.
Already, the University has seen an increase in students enrolling in summer courses, Garcia said.
