The people have spoken: The University of Texas-Pan American’s Reel to Red Productions is the No. 1 student Web site.

Reel to Red’s Web site won the Webby’s People's Voice Award in the student category in the 14th annual Webby Awards.

The Webby Awards received almost 10,000 entries from all 50 states and more than 60 countries. Reel to Red was one of five nominees in the student category. Its Web site received more than 700,000 votes.

Winners will be honored at the 14th Annual Webby Gala June 14 in Cipriani Wall Street in New York.

The New York Times has dubbed the WEBBYs "the online equivalent of an OSCAR." The awards are presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS), a 650-person judging academy whose members include Internet co-inventor Vinton Cerf, musicians Beck and David Bowie, "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening, Martha Stewart and American film producer Harvey Weinstein.

“It’s really satisfying to win something we’ve spent so long working on,” said Alexis Carranza, assistant project director for Reel to Red Productions.

Carranza said she didn’t know if the group would win, since neither she nor the others who worked on it are experienced in designing Web sites. But she is grateful to Chelse Benham, Reel to Red’s creative director, for nominating them and to all those who voted.

“The Web is the zeitgeist. It is the place people go for information, services, and entertainment,” Behnam said. “To be included among the top Web sites for 2010 is thrilling, but more importantly, to represent our University makes the entire team proud.”

Benham thanks everyone who has supported the program and who voted.
