The daylong event, sponsored by the Integrated Global Knowledge and Understanding Collaboration (IGkNU) and UTPA Career Services will feature speakers representing federal agencies and departments who will discuss opportunities for employment and federal funding, and provide tips on applying for jobs.
Nick Weimer, IGkNU manager, said the conference is a good opportunity for students to network with representatives as well as learn more about the variety of jobs available within the federal government.
Applying for jobs, internships, or scholarships in the federal government can be difficult because they are competitive, Weimer said.
“It is common to feel overlooked when applying for federal opportunities. With this in mind, we have created the Federal Opportunities Day event to give South Texans the opportunity to network with representatives from federal agencies, and create contacts that can assist them in the application process,” Weimer said.
The event includes workshops to help students tailor their resumes for government jobs and prepare them for interviews, he said.
“If someone interested in a career in government takes the time to attend this day-long event, they will be a step ahead of the competition for achieving these federal opportunities,” Weimer said.
This is the first year IGkNU, in collaboration with Career Services and the university, has hosted the event. Funded by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, IGkNU is a UTPA collaboration created to prepare students to be the next generation of leaders in the federal government. IGkNU’s programs focus on advanced interdisciplinary studies, research, cross-discipline team communication and critical thinking skills and include curriculum in Global Security Studies and Leadership as well as research and grant support, foreign language and culture classes, and study abroad experiences for UTPA students.
UTPA Career Services helps students find employment through full-time, internship/cooperative study programs and non-degree positions. It also apprises students of opportunities through job fairs, career days and other events.
