The public is invited to learn how to be part of the entrepreneurial community that is transforming Rio South Texas by attending the Second Annual Technology Entrepreneurship Bootcamp being held at The University of Texas-Pan American on Friday, March 5.

Aimed at fostering and supporting regional technology-based economic development, the daylong event will provide opportunities to learn more about entrepreneurship and technology commercialization. The startup of FibeRio Technology Corporation and the relocations of Photon 8 and Scantech are the most recent demonstrations that the Rio South Texas region has sustainable competitive advantages that enhance lucrative enterprises.

The camp’s keynote speaker will be Kimberly Watson Hemphill, author of “Fast Innovation,” a book focusing on reducing time to market, increasing new product success, and speed of production balanced against the need for product differentiation. Other presentation topics include raising capital, designing and manufacturing your technology and regional benefits for manufacturing and scaling up your production. There will also be a presentation on lessons learned by a panel of technology entrepreneurs from border startups.

UTPA partners helping to sponsor the bootcamp include EDCO Ventures, Edinburg Economic Development Corporation, MBA Alumni Association, Texas Manufacturing Assistance Center of South Texas, Lower Rio Grande Valley Workforce Solutions, McAllen Economic Development Corporation, Rapid Response Manufacturing Center, South Texas Manufacturing Association, North American Advanced Manufacturing Research and Education Initiative, and Small Business Development Center.

“The event serves as an example of how the Rio South Texas region is collaborating to foster technology-based economic development. Participants will be able to network with technology entrepreneurs at the different stages of their company development. We want those interested in technology entrepreneurship to have access to tools and resources and the networks they need to be successful,” said Jackie Michel, director of Innovation and Intellectual Property at UTPA.

The event is free and open to interested entrepreneurs, students and the public. Registration is required and available by calling 956/318-8947.

Check in for the day of the event will begin at 8 a.m. The bootcamp will start at 8:30 a.m. and be held in the Engineering Building Auditorium at UTPA, 1201 W. University Drive, Edinburg. Parking information will provided after registration.
