Lisa Ling, a veteran of two decades in TV reporting, will be the third speaker in the Distinguished Speakers Series at The University of Texas-Pan American Feb. 2.

“We feel that her style of journalism and travels will be very appealing to students,” said Edna Zambrano, Student Union director and Distinguished Speakers Series Committee member. “We feel her depth of experience will especially be a great motivation to our students majoring in communication.”

Ling has been a correspondent for Explorer on National Geographic since 2002. She covers events ranging from unstable situations in war-torn Iraq to drug wars in Columbia. She has also travelled the world to cover stories such as the Congo rapes in Africa and other important issues often not heard about. Many recognize her as a past member of ABC’s The View with Barbara Walters.

Ling’s most recent work has been with CNN as a contributor for the critically acclaimed series, Planet in Peril, in which she examines environmental challenges around the globe.

Brian Silva, a UTPA print journalism major, is looking forward to hearing her stories.

“I am so grateful for UTPA providing this opportunity for us as students, especially as a communication major,” said Silva, who is also the editor in chief for the University’s school newspaper, The Pan American. “Part of the greater benefit of this experience is that she is so full of knowledge and experience that I will learn from everything she has to say.”

Ling’s presentation, titled “Opening Minds and Hearts to the Issues Surrounding Us,” will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium. The doors will open at 7 p.m. for students, faculty and staff with appropriate UTPA ID. Seating for the public will begin at 7:20 p.m.

“We hope that those in attendance will find a lot of inspiration in what she has to say,” Zambrano said.
