“I am very proud of the students that took the chance and put themselves out there to make these films,” Jack Stanley, professor and head of the drama theatre/film/television program, said.
The students were given 24 hours to produce a five minute film. They met at Cine El Rey in McAllen in the morning to register, form teams and to receive the required elements needed for the film. They then had 24 hours to complete scriptwriting, directing and editing, before submitting their completed project the next day. All completed films were shown at the Cine El Rey on May 8.
Each film was judged on categories such as, best actor, actress, director and editing. Awards ranged from certificates to cash prizes. Second prize received $100, while Best Film received editing equipment and $300.
The 24 Hour Film Dash is sponsored by Cinesol and is open to the community. This was its first year and according to Henry Serrato, Cinesol programming director, it was a success.

Cinesol started in September 1993 and since then has supported the work of aspiring and established filmmakers by recognizing the artistic contributions of screenwriters and filmmakers. Cinesol also holds its annual Cinesol Film Festival among other events.
Stanley says win or lose, UTPA students are learning from their mistakes and gaining the experience and confidence needed in filmmaking.
