On Wednesday, April 8 the series will feature Dr. Olivier Wenker, professor of anesthesiology and director of Technology Discovery in the Office of Translational Research at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Wenker will speak on his experiences as a serial entrepreneur and also discuss how new knowledge created in academic research labs can be quickly transferred to the market place to solve real-world problems. One of his start-up companies – Internet Scientific Publications – is currently the largest independent medical publishing house online and stemmed from his interest in the use of computers, handheld devices and the Internet for the purpose of education.
On Wednesday, April 15, UTPA will welcome Dr. Jaime Parada Ávila, director general of the state of Nuevo Leon’s Institute for Innovation and Technology Transfer and the Monterrey International City of Knowledge Initiative (MTYCIC).
Ávila, who was president from 2002-2005 of Mexico’s National Counsel for Science and Technology (Mexico’s equivalent of the National Science Foundation in the United States), will speak on the MTYCIC’s economic development initiatives focused on increasing investment in science and technology and to create and grow knowledge-based businesses. MTYCIC is the most ambitious effort in all of Latin America to create a regional innovation system based on advance technology and the creation of high-tech, entrepreneurial ventures.
Both presentations, which are free and open to the public, will begin at 7:10 p.m. in the UTPA Engineering Auditorium.
