|Dr. Charles A. Sorber, UTPA interim president, addresses the university community during a Town Hall Meeting Monday, Feb. 16.|
UTPA held a Town Hall Meeting at the Student Union Theater to greet Sorber and his wife, Linda, to their new home.
“My role is one of working with you – the faculty, the staff, the students, and the community – to continue to move this institution along the path that it set up for itself,” Sorber said to the audience at the Town Hall Meeting.
Sorber will hold the interim chief position while a national presidential search is conducted for a permanent successor to former president Dr. Blandina Cárdenas, who retired from the UTPA presidency Jan. 30.
The Town Hall Meeting was also an opportunity for David B. Prior, Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at The University of Texas System, to announce the appointment of members of a presidential search advisory committee to advise The University of Texas System Board of Regents on the selection of the next UTPA president. “We are going to engage in a search process, in fact we have already begun. We will be seeking the very best person we can find both across North America and even perhaps beyond. We will look for someone to come here and join the excitement of an institution that is already well on its way,” Prior said.
In addition, Prior said the executive search firm of Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates will be assisting the UT System in the national search and advertisements for the position.
“They will do a number of different things for us. They will help time the process, they will understand the institution, the result, and help us consummate a position description. They will be involved in developing and recruiting a diverse candidate pool,” Prior said of the search firm.
