UTPA is joined in hosting the daylong event by the McAllen Chamber of Commerce, the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation and the North American Advanced Manufacturing Research and Education Initiative (NAAMREI).
The boot camp, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Engineering Lobby and Auditorium, Room 1.300. Students, regional technology entrepreneurs, educators, business and government leaders, non-profit heads and others can participate but pre-registration is required at http://www.mymbaa.com/bootcampregistration.

A keynote address will also be provided by The University of Texas at San Antonio’s College of Business Dean Dr. Lynda Y. de la Viña, who also serves as the executive director of the Center for Global Entrepreneurship. De la Viña has co-founded three successful technology-based companies and was an inaugural member of the Texas Emerging Technology Fund Advisory Committee.
“This event is being held in response to the growing number of students, staff and residents who are interested in creating new technology start-up companies. The boot camp provides an opportunity to acquire the knowledge, networks and values needed to grow innovative technology enterprises that have a positive impact on the lives of Valley entrepreneurs as well as on the region and its economic development,” said Jackie Michel, director, UTPA Office of Innovation and Intellectual Property. “Working with regional partners to offer this camp, the University hopes to advance well-paying, full employment opportunities for our graduates in the Valley and South Texas.”
Additional boot camp sponsors include the UTPA Colleges of Business Administration and Science and Engineering, UTPA Office of Innovation and Intellectual Property, UTPA Entrepreneurship Cluster, UTPA Rapid Response Manufacturing Center, and UTPA Small Business Development Center. Student support includes the National Hispanic Professional Organization, Masters of Business Administration Association, and the Engineering Student Advisory Council.
The boot camp is one activity of many to be held worldwide the week of Nov. 17-22 designated as Global Entrepreneurship Week. Initiated last year and designed to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs, the week is aimed at promoting innovation, creativity and achievement among students across the globe.
