Designed to complement Global Entrepreneurship Week Nov. 17-23, a worldwide movement initiated last year to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs, the week was expanded to Global Entrepreneurship Month by its local sponsors to offer six workshops targeting individuals who aspire to establish their own businesses.
“We aim to help college students unleash their creative potential and want to promote this month with innovation, creativity and achievement,” said Felix Garcia,a junior majoring in marketing and chair of the NHPO academic chapter at UTPA. “While global in scope, at its heart, the week is a local initiative that reflects the customs and entrepreneurial culture of each community.”
Attendees will be able to network with business professionals and learn about marketing research, trends and advertising; business plan construction; financial assistance options; import and export trade and other skills and knowledge key to turning ideas successfully into reality Garcia said.
The workshops will begin Nov. 4 and be held every Tuesday and Thursday during lunch time through the first three weeks of November. All workshops, which are free and open to not only students but the public, will begin at 11:50 a.m. and be held in the College of Business Administration (COBA) Building. Speakers will include Janie Caballero and Ismael Delgado, SBDC business advisers; Rick Carrera, SBDC business and procurement adviser; Javier Martinez III, SDBC business and trade adviser; Thelma Garza, Small Business Administration; Marlene Rodriguez, Accion Texas; Omar Quintanilla, Frost Bank; and Mark Winchester, Veterans Business Outreach Center director.
Established in 2006 at UTPA, NHPO includes students from all majors and provides a myriad of educational seminars and professional development training to foster and promote self-improvement, professional advancement and personal achievement. The SBDC, under UTPA’s Office of Center Operations and Community Services (CoSERVE), operates with a professional staff to assist the small business community with confidential business counseling and with training on a variety of topics. These may include marketing, financial statements, business planning, and tax tips among others.
Other sponsors of the workshops are the UTPA College of Business Administration and the Small Business Administration.
