| First Generation Summer Academic Camp students participate in an engineering project at The University of Texas-Pan American during the camp June 27-29. | |
Students who attended the camp were housed in University dorms and were overseen by seven mentors and two assistant coordinators. According to Aida Patino, pre-college academic program coordinator, the goal of the camp was to give students an insight to possible career paths, and encourage them to go to college by allowing them to participate in two out of six different fields of study including, secondary education, engineering, STARS leadership, computer science, clinical lab science and criminal justice.
“The Valley Outreach Center is committed to service the community and provide information, and a first-hand experience to Rio Grande Valley students on college experiences,” Patino said. “Students who would like a better understanding of a possible career path can actually get a hands-on experience on what their career path would be. Not many other programs provide these kind of ‘real-life’ insights.”
