The University of Texas-Pan American and the Instituto Allende will host the first Culture and Art Experience workshop for University faculty and staff July 27-31 in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. This will be the first of many continuing education programs designed to provide a service to the UTPA community.

“The Cultural and Art Experience is the inaugural event of a series of continuing education programs in colonial San Miguel de Allende hosted by UTPA. We plan to engage the community in arts and cultural opportunities sponsored by both community organizations in San Miguel as well as academic units of the university,” said Interim Vice Provost for Graduate Studies Dr. Cynthia J. Brown.

Participants are encouraged to experience the culture, art and history of Mexico while attending one workshop of their choice at a cost of $350 for early registration (due by July 1) or $375 for late registration (due by July 14). Hotel and transportation accommodations are not included. Workshops include creative jewelry, basic sculpture, traditional Mexican weaving master, intuitive painting, digital photography and pastel drawing. Faculty and staff will have free time to visit cultural sites and explore the city of San Miguel during the excursion. Applications must be turned into the Office of Graduate Studies, located at the Administration Building, Room 116.

“Faculty and staff, particularly those who have not had a chance to visit Mexico, will gain a better understanding of the history and culture of Mexico. San Miguel de Allende has a large expatriate community with many of its members from the U.S.,” said Sylvia Aldape, director for integration and administration.

The Instituto Allende, which is located in a former hacienda and is endorsed by the University of Guanajuato, has received international recognition by several universities in the United States.

Workshops are designed for beginner, intermediate and the expert participant, and will also feature lectures by Dr. Steven Schneider, professor and director of new programs and special projects. Schneider will lecture on various artworks and poetry that feature several Mexican artists, as well as history and culture.

“This sounds like a great opportunity for our faculty and staff to visit Mexico and to engage with the arts. San Miguel de Allende has long been a gathering place for artists and writers. It will also be a good opportunity to make friends and strengthen our sense of community here at UTPA,” Schneider said.
