Open to children ages 6-11, the camps feature activities such as tennis, golf, basketball, soccer, volleyball, swimming, “fit kids,” art, climbing, team sports and recreational games. All activities are taught by trained instructors, coaches, and/or UTPA varsity athletes.
“Fit kids” is a program designed to battle the current problem of childhood obesity which is linked to poor diet and low activity levels, said Travis Hughes, assistant director of Wellness and Recreational Sports.
“The program helps kids learn the importance of identifying and eating healthy foods, as well as introduces them to fitness activities that will help improve their cardiovascular health, flexibility, strength and body composition,” he said.
The camps run in four, two-week sessions from 8:30 a.m.-4p.m. A late program is available until 6 p.m. for an additional fee. The dates are as follows:
Session 1: June 2-13
Session 2: June 16-27
Session 3: July 7-18
Session 4: July 21-Aug. 1
“I think one thing that makes the camps unique is the opportunity to utilize a brand new $23 million facility. Along with that, participants will get to use our 35-foot climbing wall (there is nothing like it south of San Antonio), and our leisure swimming pool, which is really designed more for kids than college students,” Hughes said. “Also, the camps are unique in that our staff is primarily made up of college students that are either varsity athletes or are studying to become teachers or coaches.”
The fee is $220 for children of the general public, $200 for children of UTPA students, faculty, staff and alumni who are non-WRSC members, and $180 for children of UTPA students, faculty, staff and alumni who are WRSC members. There is a $60 fee per session for each late program.
