Learn more about ESP at UTPA public lecture May 28 by parapsychology expert

Have you ever wondered about the abilities of Allison in the popular TV show “The Medium” to talk to dead people, read people’s thoughts or see into the future? Or did you ever contemplate the possible reality of the unsolved cases involving paranormal psychology agents Mulder or Scully investigated in the cult TV classic “The X Files?”

The public is invited to join students, faculty and staff to learn more about parapsychology, the study of such phenomena, at a lecture Wednesday, May 28, 6-7:30 p.m. at The University of Texas-Pan American by Dr. Etzel Cardena, Thorsen Professor of Psychology (including parapsychology and hypnosis) at Lund University in Sweden. His talk, “Extrasensory Perception (ESP): Fact or Fiction,” will be held in the Student Union Theater.

A native of Mexico, Cardena is an internationally-recognized authority in the field of parapsychology and altered states of consciousness. His edited book, “Varieties of Anomalous Experience,” was the first scholarly work on ESP and uncommon experiences published by a mainstream professional press (American Psychological Association). He is the incoming president of the Parapsychological Association and past president of the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, the world’s foremost research hypnosis society, and of Division 30 of the American Psychological Association.

Cardena was a member of the UTPA faculty from 2000-2004 and a former chair of UTPA’s Department of Psychology and Anthropology and former director of the psychology graduate program. He has more than 150 scientific publications and has been honored with the highest scientific awards that the Society of Psychological Hypnosis and the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation bestows.
