The Hispanic Outlook released its annual “Top 25 Graduate Schools for Hispanic Students” rankings in its April 7 edition, which showed UTPA at the top of the list with the highest percentage of Hispanic students earning master’s degrees at 79 percent. In addition, UTPA ranked fifth in graduate schools enrolling Hispanics with 77 percent.
According to the report, based on 2007 data by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) produced by the U.S. Department of Education, UTPA conferred master’s degrees to a total of 631 students of which 500 were Hispanic. In the data provided a total of 361 Hispanic females earned their graduate degrees to 139 Hispanic males at UTPA.
In 2007, the University enrolled a total of 2,261 students, out of which 1,733 were Hispanic. Hispanic females once again dominated in the numbers with 1,171 enrolled in UTPA’s graduate school to 562 Hispanic males.
In four-year colleges west of the Mississippi, UTPA ranked first on its top five list in awarding master's degrees to Hispanics and ranked fifth in enrolling Hispanic graduate students.
