Students and parents will have the opportunity to meet with financial aid experts who will provide assistance in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well as information about admissions, grants, scholarships, loans, work study and other college-going issues. The FAFSA is used to determine a student's eligibility for federal and state financial aid programs.
College Goal Sunday is a national program with a goal of removing financial need as a barrier to higher education.
"Last year College Goal Sunday Texas assisted over 1,000 students at 38 locations. This year we expect to serve at least 2,000 students and families across the state," said Margaret Allen-Romero, coordinator for the statewide program.
Each year the federal government awards more than $80 million in financial aid for higher education. According to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), Texans received $4 billion in aid last year.
THECB P-16 Field Specialist Jaime D. Garza said financial aid is available for students.
"Special programs like College Goal Sunday serve as vehicles for students to realize that a college education is accessible and that financial assistance is available to pay for it," he said.
Organizers recommend that students bring all 2007 tax information for themselves as well as their parents including W2s, tax return and other pertinent tax-related materials.
At UTPA, the workshop will be held on the first floor of the Student Services Building located on the main campus at 1201 W. University Drive in Edinburg.
