The memorial service is being organized by students in the UTPA Department of Communication in conjunction with the Student Government Association. The program will include music, readings, and prayers, as well as comments from UTPA President Dr. Blandina Cárdenas. During the ceremony students will each place a rose, representing the victims, on a Virginia Tech wood carving created by UTPA students. A banner reading "Virginia Tech, We Remember You" will also be available for all students, faculty and staff to sign, which will be sent to the campus.
The Dean of Students Office will host an open forum at the Student Union Commons at 3 p.m. that same day for students, staff and faculty. This will be an opportunity to reflect on the incident at Virginia Tech through open questions and discussion. Staff from University Police, Residence Life, Counseling and Psychological Services, and Environmental Health and Safety will be on hand to respond to questions and provide information about UTPA services and resources.
Also on Thursday, the student organization Campus Crusade for Christ will hold a prayer service from noon-1 p.m. at the University Chapel.
In addition, college students across the country have declared Friday, April 20 as National Maroon and Orange Day to commemorate those who lost their lives. The UTPA Dean of Students Office is encouraging the University community to wear the Virginia Tech colors in show of support.
