The conference fosters cooperation among engineering and technology colleges, as well as other programs and institutions, including practitioners of the profession and government agencies.
Expected to attract close to 200 engineering educators and students, the ASEE-GSW conference provides opportunities for professionals from Louisiana, New Mexico and Texas to both exchange and learn new methods for enhancing ideals ethics and standards in engineering and engineering technology education and practice. This is the first time UTPA will host the conference.
Conference chair Dr. Hashim Mahdi, UTPA professor and chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, said the conference provides a great place for the exchange of ideas to improve engineering education and increase the dialogue among educators in engineering fields to best promote engineering careers and graduate studies in engineering.
“It is critical for the United States to educate more engineers in order to maintain competitiveness in research and development and technology-based businesses. Increasing the number of Hispanic engineers is critical to maintaining the number of engineers, especially those pursuing graduate degrees in engineering,” Mahdi said.
The conference will include keynote presentations and breakout sessions on faculty, graduate and undergraduate student research, engineering ethics, learning pedagogy, entrepreneurship and partnership, instructor training, laboratory development and recruitment and retention. Poster sessions will also be held.
A nonprofit organization, ASEE has more than 12,000 members including deans, department heads, faculty members, students and government and industry representatives who come from all disciplines of engineering and engineering technology. Its organizational membership includes 400 engineering and engineering technology colleges and affiliates, more than 50 corporations and numerous government agencies and professional organizations. Its mission is to further education in engineering and engineering technology.
