All departments within the College of Arts and Humanities - art, communication, English, history and philosophy, modern languages and literature, and music – will collaborate on the event to give valuable insight into the artistic, creative and educational environment of the University. Other FESTIBA partners include the UTPA Colleges of Education and Social and Behavioral Sciences and the Division of External Affairs.
A highlight of FESTIBA on opening day, March 1, will be a reading and discussion session with 1960 Pulitzer Prize-winning poet W.D. Snodgrass at the Student Union starting at 4 p.m. Snodgrass is considered “the first of his generation to be labeled a confessional poet.” He has written more than 20 books of poetry including “Heart’s Needle", which won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.
In addition, FESTIBA will host the Texas Book Festival Author! Author! Program, which features three authors of children and adolescent literature – Lila Guzman, David Rice, and Rene Saldana, a former UTPA assistant professor in English. The three writers will visit local schools and read from their literary works. In addition, they will participate in discussions and readings with UTPA students and the public, March 1, 1:30-4 p.m. at the College of Education. FESTIBA will also include a mariachi workshop March 2 for middle and high school mariachi groups with Jose Hernandez of Mariachi Sol de Mexico. The workshop will conclude with a competition March 3 at the UTPA Fine Arts Auditorium.
Additional FESTIBA events and activities include lectures and presentations by UTPA arts and humanities faculty, a book fair, art exhibits, music and dance concerts, a multimedia light and music show, among other activities.
FESTIBA will conclude with a Community Day, March 3, and offers free exhibits, writing and drama workshops, concerts, movies, historical re-enactments, theatre productions, and much more.
