While a standard college semester is 16 weeks, a miniterm offers the equivalent amount of material and credit in a shortened, more concentrated period of instruction.
“The miniterm offers an opportunity for students to accelerate progress toward completion of their degree. If a student completed three semester hours in the May miniterm each year of their four-year program it could put them one semester closer to graduation,” said Dennis McMillan, associate vice president for Enrollment and Student Services. “Another benefit for our students who have to work during the summer is the option to complete a class in three weeks before starting a summer job.”
The University will offer 28 undergraduate courses during the miniterm McMillan said.
“The courses offered in the miniterm are not meant to supplant the regular summer schedule,” McMillan said. “Our intent is to provide additional sections of high demand classes that allow students an option to earn credit in a shortened format.”
Anyone interested in miniterm classes must have passed all sections of the TSI (Texas Success Initiative) exam or be TSI exempt. TSI requires minimum test scores in writing, reading and math skills.
McMillan said students should meet with their academic adviser if they are interested in enrolling for a miniterm class.
The classes will meet Monday through Saturday and are scheduled in the morning, afternoon and evening. Morning hours will be 8-11 a.m.; afternoon hours are 1-4 p.m.; and evening hours are 5:30-8:30 p.m.
Registration for the miniterm started March 27 for continuing students and runs through the first day of the miniterm—May 15. There will be no registrations allowed after that. Tuition and fees will be calculated as a first summer session course. Payments are due by Monday, May 15.
The Academic Calendar Committee has changed the semester begin/end dates from what was originally scheduled. Session dates for the 2006 semesters are as follows: Summer I, June 5-July 11 (grades due on July 12); Summer II, July 12-Aug. 16 (grades due on Aug. 16); and Fall, Aug. 24-Dec. 14 (grades due on Dec. 15).
