“Work Study Appreciation Week is designed to remind work study students that they are an integral part of UTPA’s success and that their contribution does not go unnoticed,” said Jael Garcia, work study coordinator in Student Financial Services.
The National Student Employment Association (NSEA) sponsors National Student Employment Week each year during the second week of April. However, UTPA chose to celebrate a week earlier this year due to other scheduled campus events.
At the luncheon, the Work Study of the Year award will be announced. Nominees for the award and their supervisors are invited to attend. The award is based on such characteristics as: reliability, quality of work, initiative, professionalism, uniqueness of contribution, academic achievement, and community involvement. This year 24 students have been nominated.
First, second and third place winners will be recognized and receive scholarships in the amounts of $300, $150, and $75, respectively. The first-place winner will advance and have the opportunity to be selected as the National Student Employee of the Year, which carries with it a $1,000 cash award.
The Supervisor of the Year award is also announced during the luncheon.
“For this award we choose a supervisor that our office considers is going the extra mile in making sure everything is in place regarding the employment of the work study students,” Garcia said.
The event is being organized through the Work Study Office with the help of Student Financial Services and Career Placement Services. In conjunction with National Student Employment Week, Career Placement Services will host the Student Employment Job Fair the following week on Thursday, April 13 for students interested in working while they are pursuing their education. Representatives from various organizations will be at the fair, looking to hire students for part-time and full-time non-degreed positions.
“I hope students will take part in the events and that each department plans something special to show their student employees that they are appreciated,” Garcia said.
