Now in its fifth year, the annual program provides a unique opportunity to listen to and meet some of the world’s most influential statesmen, leaders and artists, while raising money for UTPA scholarships. Past speakers have included President George H.W. Bush, General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, New York City Mayor Rudolph “Rudy” Giuliani and former U.S. Secretary of State James A. Baker.

As one of Latin America’s foremost writers, Allende has sold more than 35 million copies of her books, which have been translated into 27 languages. Allende published her first novel, “The House of Spirits” in 1982, and continues to produce novels based in part on her own experience and the experiences of women, while weaving myth and realism together in her writing.

Her 1995 work, “Paula,” is based on the extended coma and death of her daughter in 1992.

Before becoming an author, Allende worked as a journalist in print, on television and in movie documentaries. She has also taught literature at colleges in Virginia, New Jersey and California. Recently, Allende was also one of eight women chosen to carry the Olympic flag in Torino, Italy at the opening ceremony for the 20th Winter Games.

A reception is set for 6:30 p.m. and a dinner at 7 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse followed by Allende’s presentation at 8 p.m. Sponsorships are available from $7,500-$35,000. All proceeds benefit student scholarships at UTPA.

Sponsorships this year also included an evening with His Grace Gerald Cavendish Grosvenor, the sixth Duke of Westminster and the third wealthiest man in England, who spoke Feb. 17 at the McAllen Country Club.
