DSHS and UTPA to host Advanced Radiological Emergency Preparedness course

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) in conjunction with The University of Texas-Pan American will host a 32-hour Advanced Radiological Emergency Preparedness (AREP) course Feb. 6-10 in Edinburg.

The course will be held at the UTPA Academic Support Annex, Room 175, located at 2412 S. Closner. The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Education and the Governors Division of Emergency Management has approved the course for a continuing education credit.

The 32-hour performance based (hands-on) course covers the concepts of radiation protection, radiation detection instrumentation, radiological monitoring techniques, radiological hazards and protective actions, team building, and basic procedures to support planning for emergency and recovery activities in the event of a radiological incident or accident. Participants are asked to dress appropriately (e.g. regular work attire) in preparation for the practical and functional exercises.
