After nearly a year of fundraising a new Steinway & Sons concert grand piano arrived at The University of Texas-Pan American Nov. 30. The Padrinos del Piano, a fundraiser created by UTPA President Dr. Blandina Cárdenas earlier this year, has raised $60,000 toward the cost of the piano. UTPA executive management, the UTPA Foundation and its members, UTPA staff, faculty and retired faculty members, as well as friends and supporters of the University have contributed to the piano fund to date. The nearly nine-foot piano made of ebonized birch will be housed at the Fine Arts Auditorium at the University. The piano will also be used by the Valley Symphony Orchestra (VSO) – composed of local educators, UTPA faculty members and a few of the University’s outstanding music students – who brings in artists from around the globe. The piano will be dedicated Feb. 24 during a VSO concert at the UTPA Fine Arts Auditorium. Pictured with the new piano are Cárdenas (sitting), and standing from left to right are Dr. Peter Dabrowski, assistant professor of music and VSO conductor; Dr. Dahlia Guerra, associate professor and chair of the music department; and Deborah Sandoval-Moore, institutional director for Steinway. To make a donation to the Padrinos del Piano fund, contact Guerra at 956/381-3471.
