Members of the Russian National Baseball Team ages 15-16 toured the campus of The University of Texas-Pan American August 11 while in Edinburg practicing for the AA World Youth Baseball Championships to be held in Monterrey, Mexico August 17-29. Dr. John A. Edwards, vice president for Enrollment and Student Services, is pictured talking to some of the players in the UTPA Visitors Center. The approximately 30 team members spent a week practicing at the Edinburg Professional Baseball Stadium, home field for the UTPA Broncs baseball team, and had practice sessions with two local teams affiliated with the American Amateur Baseball Congress (AABC), Rio Grande Valley Mickey Mantle Division. The AABC is the largest amateur baseball organization in the United States for players above junior baseball age and the only amateur baseball program which provides progressive and continuous organized competition for sub-teens through adults. This is the first year this league has been started in the Valley. The delegation was hosted by the Edinburg Convention and Visitors Bureau, a division of the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce.
