Dr. Jose Cordero, assistant surgeon general of the Public Health Service and director of the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, spoke to more than 50 people at The University of Texas-Pan American June 10 about establishing UTPA as a Center of Excellence for Autism and Developmental Disabilities Research and Epidemiology. Cordero said he wanted to work toward the development of a protocol for early diagnosis of autism, collaboration of interdisciplinary experts through interactive video technology, improvement of the specificity of the diagnosis of autism through the construction of the developmental differential diagnostic scale and also increase the accessibility to diagnosis and treatment in a bicultural and bilingual population. During his visit, coordinated by UTPA's educational psychology department in the College of Education, he also observed an evaluation of a child with autism through the use of interactive video technology.
