The Student Leadership Academy and Program at The University of Texas-Pan American will be hosting its first Student Leadership Week April 19-23 with a weeklong schedule of events showcasing the many ways student leaders make a difference on the University campus. The activities are planned as part of the National Student Leadership Week celebrated each April to encourage and recognize student leadership and service.

To start the week’s activities, five UTPA student leaders will be recognized with a “Salute to Student Leaders” award at the leadership kick-off event “Meet your Campus and Community Leaders,” Tuesday, April 19, noon-1 p.m. in the University Ballroom. Besides the awards ceremony, the event will also provide students the opportunity to meet campus and invited community leaders.

“The ‘Salute to Student Leaders’ award will recognize and celebrate students who have unselfishly served their community and who have shown potential to become tomorrow’s leaders,” said Amy Martin, UTPA Student Leadership Academy coordinator.

Students were nominated on the basis of academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, and/or community service and were required to be enrolled at UTPA for the 2004-2005 academic year and hold a cumulative GPA of 2.0. The winners will be selected by a committee of three UTPA staff members – Nancy Smith, Texas Grant coordinator; Alicia Espinoza, academic adviser; and Melissa De la Garza, career placement specialist. Seventeen nominations were received according to Martin.

Other events scheduled throughout the week include a performance, titled “Magic of Leadership,” by motivational speaker/magician Curtis Zimmerman on April 19, 5:30-7 p.m. in the University Ballroom co-sponsored by the Office of Student Development and Residence Life; “Leadership at the Lawn,” April 20, 8 p.m., an outdoor showing on the Student Union Quad of the movie “King Arthur,” co-sponsored by the University Program Board; a performance April 21, noon-1 p.m. in the Student Union Commons titled “Legends in Leadership,” in which University student performers bring historical leaders alive; an X-Treme Leadership Challenge, April 22, 3:30-6:30 p.m. on the Student Union Quad featuring student teams of six facing challenges requiring teamwork; and the South Padre Island Beach Clean-Up on April 23, 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. at South Padre Island in conjunction with National Volunteer Week.

Participants in the week’s events are also encouraged to contribute nonperishable items and “spare change” throughout the week to be given to Mujeres Unidas, a nonprofit organization in McAllen that assists women and children of domestic violence and sexual assault.
