On Sept. 7, 2004 the Texas Department of Transportation began an 11-month project to improve SH 107 (University Drive) from Jackson Road to 10th Street in Edinburg. The 1.6-mile stretch of highway is being redesigned to a six-lane roadway with a concrete median, according to Eddie Morin, UTPA parking manager.
Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to use alternate routes to get to campus in order to avoid delays caused by the construction. Morin suggests motorists enter from the north side of the University. For people driving from the McAllen/Mission area on SH 107, he proposes turning north on McColl, then east on Schunior Street or Chapin Road. Those traveling from Expressway 281 are advised to exit on Schunior Street or Chapin Road.
“We recommend that commuters allow enough time to enter and exit campus,” Morin said. “Long delays are expected throughout the day and into the evening.”
The construction area is designated as a 35 mph zone and will be heavily enforced by the Edinburg Police Department, the Department of Public Safety and the University Police Department.
A 500-space parking lot is also expected to open northeast of the Edinburg Baseball Stadium in early February, Morin said. The lot will have a shuttle service available and can be easily accessed from Schunior Street or Sugar Road.
