“The money raised in the past two years by our group has helped fund the remodeling of the women’s locker room, assisted in equipping a new training and workout area exclusively for UTPA student-athletes and provided support for travel, equipment and uniform expenses,” said Lynn Jimerson, UTPA Office of University Relations publications production manager and gala chair.

This year’s gala, held from 7 p.m. to midnight, will feature live music from Dean Canty’s Jazz Band, a Charleston contest, drinks and hot and cold hors d’oeuvres uniquely reflecting the Twenties theme, including a “mashed potato martini bar” with a wide array of toppings said Jimerson.
A dove hunting trip, golf clubs, a weekend at a South Padre Island condo, an España gift certificate and two round-trip Continental Airlines tickets are among the wide array of auction items up for the highest bid in live, blackboard and silent auctions. Casino tables will offer blackjack and craps hosted by UTPA “celebrities.”
Although Twenties dress is not required to attend, best-dressed prizes will be awarded. A professional photographer will also be available for photos against a backdrop of vintage cars parked at the estate that evening. The Shary-Shivers Estate is located at 3.5 Miles North Shary Road in Mission.
Tickets are available at $50 per person and can be purchased from Gala Committee members. Among the sponsors so far are Sam’s Club, Wilson Construction, Antique Car Club of Weslaco, Spaw Glass, International Bank of Commerce, SKANSKA Construction, Sodexho and Grunwald Printing Company. Sponsorships are still needed at levels from $300 to $5,000. Advertisements in the event book will also be available until Oct. 22. Items for any of the auction venues are also welcome.
Jimerson, who has been involved all three years of the fund-raiser, said it has always been a fun event but also gratifying.
“It is so rewarding to be able to help such fine young women who truly appreciate the assistance,” Jimerson said.
