The University of Texas-Pan American’s Department of Management, Marketing and International Business (MMIB) has formed an advisory group of University and community leaders to provide effective liaison between the professional community of the Rio Grande Valley and the University’s MMIB department.
The MMIB advisory group’s role is to facilitate and support all areas of the MMIB department including the creation of quality educational programs, the dissemination of leading-edge research and the optimization of services between the business community and the University.
Dr. David Sturges, chair and associate professor for MMIB, founded the group in an effort to build “in-roads” with the community. He hopes the group will be able to assist in the formation of strong working relationships between the business community and UTPA.
"Among the primary goals of the University is to improve and expand the relationships between the University and the professional community,” Sturges said. “The establishment of the MMIB Advisory Group (MMIBAG) is to provide the liaison between the MMIB and its constituents in the Valley. The goal of the MMIBAG is to be an independent communication link between the department and the professional community. The group is not there for us to tell them what to do, but for them to gauge the business community’s needs and to identify those professionals the MMIB can serve."
The advisory group’s mission is to encourage greater participation of business professionals coming into UTPA classrooms to give lectures and to increase involvement of faculty and students out in the professional community.
"This is unusual for a department to have this kind of outreach, but we believe it is important for us to have input from the professional community to ensure the MMIB remains relevant and significant to economic development in the Valley," Sturges said.
Members of the MMIBAG are: Mike Blum, marketing director of NAIRioco Realty; Austin Brock, college education program coordinator for Disney Corporation in Florida; Roddy Davis, marketing director for Magic Valley Electric Cooperative; Grace Garza, director of labs at Edinburg Regional Medical Center; Stephanie Gitkin Hawk, president of Acumen Professional Development; Ron Loidl, director of human resources for LG Electronic-Reynosa; José Luis Muños, vice president and general manager of Border Media Partners; Ron Risica, director of Risica and Sons Glass; Humberto Rodriguez, president and CEO of Exquisita, LLP; Arturo Torres, attorney at law for Martin, Draught & Torres; Lena Winkle, regional director of UBS Paine Weber; Chelse Benham, radio/television production supervisor for the Office of University Relations; Dr. F.J.
