Dr. Miguel Paredes, professor of mathematics and director of the LSAMP at UTPA, said the support of President Nevárez has been essential to the UTPA LSAMP program.
“Dr. Nevárez has been a member of the University of Texas System LSAMP Governing Board since the inception of the program and provided initial cost sharing contributions to support the local LSAMP, which allowed for the creation of the LSAMP math lab at UTPA,” Paredes said.

According to The University of Texas System LSAMP mission statement, all nine of the academic components of the UT System and 10 regional community college districts have united in an effort to increase the number of undergraduate and graduate degrees in science, mathematics, engineering and technology (STEM) fields through curriculum revision, student stipends, mentoring and research participation.
The UTPA math lab, funded through institutional monies and grant money provided by the National Science Foundation for LSAMP programs, is a peer tutoring program that places an emphasis on teaching by discovery. The lab, open to any students needing assistance in math courses, is open 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday. All math tutors are majors in STEM fields.
The Student Research Program provides STEM students financial assistance and opportunities for research in ongoing research projects in STEM fields, also with the goal of increasing the number of underrepresented minority students in graduate programs in science, engineering, mathematics and technology.
“LSAMP provides academic opportunities and financial support to those who want to go beyond the basic curriculum and contributes to the numbers of students pursuing master’s degrees and Ph.D.’s.,” Paredes said.
