Faculty and staff at The University of Texas-Pan American recently joined the Career Placement Services office in honoring students and corporate recruiters at the Fifth Annual Partners in Excellence Banquet. The banquet recognized employer support and student participation in internship programs.

“I learned everything about my job as executive team leader at target,” said Gabriela Reyes, a recent UTPA business graduate. “When you study management it’s theory, but in an internship you’re in the workplace getting real experience. All your classes come together on the job. There are human resources, accounting, finance and production all-in-one.”

Eugenio Diaz, United States assistant chief deputy marshal served as the keynote speaker.

Keynote speaker, Eugnio Diaz, United States assistant chief deputy marshal, addresses the audience.
In his address, Diaz strongly supported and praised the work of Javier Torres, a UTPA student and intern at the United States Marshals Service.

“Javier has illustrated excellent skills in his internship,” Diaz said. “We hope he decides to come to work for us when he graduates.”

Internship programs give students an inside track with companies they work for by allowing both student and employer an opportunity to get to know each other. It helps the student understand how things work within an organization. Through internships students are able to make better career decisions and also gain applicable work experience that will make them more competitive in the job market.

“These organizations being honored tonight hire numerous UTPA students and they are very supportive of our career services program. It’s a win-win situation,” said Susie Chapa, coordinator for cooperative education for Career Placement Services at UTPA.

This year’s honorees included: Gabriela Barajas and Gerardo Ramos, Students of the year; Dr. Linda M. Mathews, Faculty of the Year and Alps Automotive, Inc., Employer of the Year.
